One of the ten best-dressed women of the world, the rich, beautiful, and glamorous Condesa de Romanones began life as Aline Griffith of Pearl River, New York, a girl destined for a fairy-princess existence. How this young woman was sent to Spain as an intelligence agent in World War II, how she met and married the handsome Conde de Romanones and restored Pascualete, his ancient estate, is told in an enchanting memoir that richly reflects the charm, intelligence, and superb taste of its remarkable author.
The owner of several large ranches worked by tenant farmers, the Count had never visited his fincas in the remote province of Extremadura before his young wife persuaded him to make the trip. Recalling their search for the property, the Countess describes how she and her party set out from the old town of Trujillo, finally arriving dramatically at midnight on the grounds of the ancient estate which dates back to the Middle Ages.
The transformation of this rambling medieval buidling into a warm, hospitable country home (complete with swimming pool and airport) was accomplished with considerable initiative. Determined to trace the history of the old Palacio, the Countess reveals how she studied paleography in order to read the hundreds of old documents relating to its past.
With characteristic warmth and humor, she describes her colorful experiences with the estate workers; Primitivo, the hereditary guard of the Senores Condes; and Pillete, who owns the Bar Imperior in Trujillo and knows the answer to everything. Her own vitality and enthusiasm for the projects shines through the narrative, whether she is speaking about the renovations, her research, or her fascinating and fashionable friends.

The History of Pascualete The Earth Rests Lightly eBook Aline Countess of Romanones

Alina Countess if Romanones, who married a Spanish Grandee just after WW2 and rehabilitates one of his estates. It is well written, has lots of descriptions of a way of life in the country, history, culture, and personal stories that are both charming and about her family and friends. It is very well written and keeps your interest.

She has written several other books which I have enjoyed, mostly about her life as an OSS agent during WW2 in Madrid job-mobbing with high society, between adventures in spying.

The History of Pascualete The Earth Rests Lightly eBook Aline Countess of Romanones Reviews

Very interesting subject and great writing. Read it at one sitting .
Very interesting from a historical point of view. However you have to be aware of the authors background and previous novels to really apriciate this book
Adore this book & enjoyed all of the spy books many years ago..happy she is doing well. Highly recommend this incredible work
Fills in some gaps. I love all her books. Pascualete was such a huge part of her life.
This is a delightful book. She has such a zest for life and what ever she does comes thru in her books.
After reading all of her spy books, I found this one about the lady as just herself, a wife and mother living in Spain. It was fabulous!! No spy stories here! Its all about what it was like for her, as a transplanted American who, against her Spanish husband's advice, decided to go and see what life is like on one of the fincas (ranches) in the hot Extremadura portion of Spain. She tells about the unstinting hospitality she encountered, the local characters, and of her efforts to bring medieval building- whose masonry includes Roman tombstones (!!!) into the Twentieth Century. While I read the book, I took virtual trips to the places in it via Google Earth. Aline is a countess, but she can laugh at herself as she describes how she learned to navigate rural Spanish society. In doing so, she also brought honor to the family she married into, and takes us along for a wonderful ride through this portion of her life. I loved this book!!
I have been a fan of this American lady who ventured into Spain in the mid-forties of the last century, and has made her stay a quite remarkable adventure. This book is not only the history of her husband's ancestral home but of the Spain of that time as well. Aline, Countess of Romanones, a New Yorker by birth, has gained the title of one of the most fascinating Spaniards of all times.
